What Is The Red Tent?
Part 1

For those new to the concept and symbolism of the red tent being offered in the festival du feminine, here is a short explanation. Watch this space! We are bringing you a series of articles about women, menstruation and the red tent.

The name ‘red tent’ came to be popular after the release of a bestselling novel ‘The Red Tent’ by Anita Diamant. Though the red tent has always existed and has been called by different names in different indigenous tribes and ancient cultures since centuries. The native Americans called it ‘the moon lodge’. The rituals been observed world over have differed, but the symbolism remains the same.

The red tent according to the ancient times was usually a gathering of menstruating women. It was conducted in a separate tent allocated specifically for this purpose. Young girls would start attending the red tent when they started their first cycle. Here is where they would be initiated into womanhood and was taught about fertility cycles and all the different facets of being a woman by the older women of the tribe.

The red tent gatherings were also often held during the first moon as this time is often the time when the ancients believed, affected women the most. This time, two weeks after the full moon is when women feel tired, introverted, insecure with often old wounds surfacing at this time. For centuries it has been known the lunar cycles affect human behaviour and emotions, hence the wise ones offered emotional support and healing especially to women in these “red tents”.
